Happy Memorial Day Weekend Pittsburgh!

It’s hard to believe it’s already Memorial Day weekend in 2018! With the month of May comes three significant holidays: Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and of course, Memorial Day!! We’ve already given you some awesome ways to celebrate the first two, and now it’s time to celebrate Memorial Day weekend as well. But first, have you ever wondered why Memorial Day is actually celebrated? While yes, it is the “unofficial” start to summer, there’s a bit more to it than that.

Why is Memorial Day Celebrated?

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, according to our source. Traditions of cleaning and decorating fallen soldiers’ graves first became popular in late summer after the Civil War. After World War 1 the tradition -

“expanded to honor those who have died in all American Wars.”

It’s also important to know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is specific for those who have died for our country in the Military, typically from dying in battle or a wound that happened from battle. Veterans Day is for ALL who served and honored our country, alive or passed.

Now that you know the history behind the Memorial Day Holiday, thanks to our source, let’s find some ways for you to celebrate it in the greater Pittsburgh area!
